The IT landscape changes almost daily, and what is required of IT evolves along with it. Organizations depend more and more heavily on automation, and that makes them vulnerable. This means IT auditing is often high on the corporate agenda. IT audits play an increasingly important role in effective corporate governance. IT auditors assess organizations’ automation and automation’s organization. This allows organizations to prepare for change proactively.

Part-time Executive Master of IT Auditing (EMITA) 

As an IT auditor, information specialist, accountant, IT manager, quality manager or risk manager, you are always working to keep up with the latest IT developments, assurance, legislation and financial issues. Exemption for RA, RC and RO candidates

Have you completed the theoretical part of the post master register accountant (RA)? This gives an exemption for the first and second module. As a result, you complete the program within 1,5 years, including graduation. If you are RC or RO, you may also be able to get an exemption. Please contact the Program Adviser.

Participant Profile

The participants in the Executive Master of IT Auditing program come from various backgrounds; including IT auditors, but also information specialists, accountants, IT managers, quality managers and risk managers. The range of experiences within your group will facilitate the further development of your IT Auditing skillset.
Are you an accountant or controller? The Royal Netherlands Institute of Chartered Accountants (NBA) qualifies the Executive Master of IT Auditing as continuing professional education. 

Admission requirements for the Executive Master of IT Auditing

We aim to form groups of participants with lots of talent, experience and potential. We therefore impose admission requirements. This helps us guarantee provision of education at the highest level. What we ask:
  • A bachelor's degree (from a research university or university of applied sciences) in a related field
  • At least 1 year of auditing experience
  • An introductory interview with the Academic Director is part of the admission procedure
  • If applicable, the successful completion of the necessary components of the premaster

A part-time Executive Master of IT Auditing (EMITA) can take your career to the next level. As a Master of IT Auditing, you have a wide range of skills. You are up to date on the latest IT developments, can design and perform complex audits and provide support to management. You can also advise broadly on IT policies and implementation and have an understanding of ethical dilemmas. The part-time Executive Master of IT Auditing imparts academic knowledge through practical case studies relevant to the duties of an IT auditor.

Learning on the Job

Unique to the Master of IT Auditing is the option to choose between two specializations; Cybersecurity and Data & Analytics. Determine your own specialization by selecting one of these modules. A key element of this program is the practical application of up-to-date knowledge and skills gained through case studies. The program does not conclude with the usual master’s thesis. Instead, your final project is a practical IT audit, performed as a team. You and your team will complete an entire audit from start to finish and report on your findings.

Result: EMITA master’s degree and MSc

On successful completion of the program, you will be awarded an EMITA master’s degree and the internationally recognized MSc title. The degree is recognized as a Master of Science by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). Additionally, TIAS is recognized by AACSB and NOREA.

The duties of an IT auditor go beyond the performance of audits. Technology’s rapid evolution requires IT auditors to have a solid grasp of the reasons behind audit requests. Therefore, in addition to the gaining of knowledge, the program also focuses on promoting a critical, investigative attitude. The assessment, reporting and substantiation of audit findings play important roles. A key element of this program is its focus on using the knowledge and skills gained through case studies in your own work. A wide range of stakeholders and ethical dilemmas are addressed as well.

Composition of part-time Executive Master of IT Auditing (EMITA)

The master’s program offers a highly varied curriculum. Lectures are heavily case-oriented. They are taught from the perspective of management and focus primarily on how to set up operational control processes. Our lecturers are authorities in their fields, have extensive practical experience and are highly involved in the program. The personalized guidance at TIAS and the part-time format make sure that you can combine your studies with work and other duties. The master’s program consists of these modules:

  • Business Process Control 
  • IT Auditing Fundamentals
  • Trust & Controls Technology
  • Business Research Methods
  • Management of IT
  • One of the following specializations:
    - Auditing Cybersecurity
    - Data & Analytics
  • Comprehensive IT Auditing

The program is concluded by a master’s thesis project that centers on your performance of an IT auditing assignment as a group.

Study load

The number of lecture days per academic year is approximately 28 days. The lectures are given on Fridays, which will take place partly online. In addition, the study program has a study load of 12 -15 hours per week excluding the lecture days.

Personal development

Your personal development is an integral element of the EMITA program. The aim is that in addition to gaining knowledge and insight, you will also work on your personal development and leadership skills.

Getting started quickly with the Premaster as a HBO participant?

It is possible to start quickly with the TIAS Premaster (in Dutch) due to the various start and entry moments of this program. We also offer an English-taught Online Premaster which allows you to start immediately after enrollment. Customized tracks are also available if needed. Cost of a part-time Executive Master of IT Auditing (EMITA)

Following your enrollment, the Executive Master of IT-Auditing (EMITA) Program Adviser will reach out to you for an initial introduction and to schedule an intake meeting with the Academic Director. The purpose of this intake is to discuss your development ambitions and the match with the learning objectives of the program.
