By Theo Camps | March 20, 2023 | 1 min read

On March 17, Theo Camps, TIAS Professor of Organizational Science & Public Administration, received a royal distinction for his commitment and contributions to science and society. He was appointed an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau by Hubert Bruls, Mayor of Nijmegen. Professor Camps was awarded this distinction during his valedictory address “Intention and Impact: Long term value creation, instant evaluation” at the Tilburg University auditorium.

Throughout his long and illustrious career as a scientist, director and advisor in the public domain, Professor Camps remained committed to improving civic and social organizations’ effectiveness, embedding them in society and enabling them to contribute to important issues in education, healthcare and infrastructure. By publishing his work both frequently and accessibly, he demonstrably contributed to the advancement of civil society’s organizational thinking. He held many advisory positions, was active in conflict resolution and as a coach.

Ever since his appointment at TIAS School for Business and Society and Tilburg University in 2000, Professor Camps played an important part in various study programs for managers, directors and Supervisory Board members in the public and non-profit sectors. In his role as Academic Director of the Program for Directors in the Public and Non-Profit Sectors, he influenced how the Dutch government is run. Experienced directors regularly refer to their positive experiences with this program under Professor Camps’ guidance.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Camps was CEO at consulting firm Berenschot and also held positions at various civic organizations. His efforts at OMO, KRO and Skanfonds in particular contributed significantly to shaping a new type of leadership for ideological organizations and civic initiatives. He was also involved in politics from the beginning of his career. First as a municipal council member in Nijmegen, later as an advisor, by helping to form the council and as an author.
