A model for systematic diagnosis and intervention

September 23, 2015 | 1 min read

In an article in the Dutch-language Maandblad voor Accountancy en Bedrijfseconomie (MAB), Prof. Dr. Caris and Ron van der Pennen discuss a diagnostic model which can be used to assess the strategic changes at a local bank in the process of recovering from the effects of the banking crisis.

The model contains three dimensions to describe the situation and the problem: 1. the context of the problem; 2. the approach to the problem; and 3. the importance of intervention. Information received during interviews, a group discussion with employees, and discussions with management have been analyzed on the basis of this model.

Serious problems in a complex organization can be characterized as dilemmas or as wicked problems. This distinction is based on the conflicting interests and disadvantages of each improvement choice. It is necessary in the case of such serious issues that you gain sufficient insight into the background and influencing factors, and to build consensus among stakeholders on the nature and cause of the problem.
