TIAS MBA students selected for international Prize

Our Full-time MBA students participated in AIM2Flourish: an international, UN supported platform for sharing stories about business innovations that create value for both business and society. Business students around the world are participating in AIM2Flourish and using Appreciative Inquiry (strength-based interviews) and the UN Global Goals as a lens to search out and report on world-changing innovations. 3 of the 16 stories that TIAS FT MBA students posted on AIM2Flourish last year have been selected as 2021 Flourish Prize Finalists.

As part of their mission to demonstrate the power of Business as an Agent of World Benefit, each year AIM2Flourish honors the best-of-the-best stories with 17 Flourish Prizes - one for each UN Sustainable Development Goal. The Prizes recognize the accomplishments of the student author(s), the professor who oversaw the story’s publication, and the business leader interviewed for the story. These 17 Flourish Prize Honorees will be announced in June.

The three shortlisted TIAS-related stories are:

Giving Birth to Water featuring Elbow Engineers Pvt Ltd. in India written by Amresh Jha and Ruby Hsiao under the direction of Mirjam Minderman.

Elbow Engineers is a technology-based firm that manufactures machines, which convert moisture in the atmosphere to pure and fresh drinking water. The innovation’s primary mission is to provide sustainable, safe, and pure drinking water to places where water is in scarcity and without causing any damage to the surface and underground water. In addition, in most cases, these potable water generators can be powered by a small portable solar panel, which is highly cost-efficient and energy-saving.

The Disruptor: How ‘Studio Wae’ Created Circular Design Products from Waste featuring Studio Wae in Netherlands (Holland) written by Hee Yeon Shim and Nithin Antony under the direction of Mirjam Minderman.

Studio Wae was founded in 2017 by Tynke van den Heuvel. This 3 year-old-startup wants to make an impact on waste flows. They tap into urban mining waste streams (i.e. recovering raw materials from demolished buildings and old paving) and make aesthetically pleasing products from them. From this waste stream, they produce circular design concrete (for paving) and carpets. Furthermore, as from 2019, Studio Wae started a workspace for Syrian refugees in the Netherlands. The vision of the company is to make products that have an impact on the environment and do so by providing jobs for socially challenged individuals.

Clean Mobility For Everyone featuring Lightyear in Netherlands (Holland) written by Marizel Vorster and Samar Morshedi under the direction of Mirjam Minderman.

Lightyear is a Dutch technology company on a mission to make clean mobility available to everyone, everywhere in the world. Lightyear One is its first driving prototype: an innovative solar car with a focus on range and efficiency. Motorists driving with Lightyear One will be able, depending on the climate, to drive up to twenty thousand kilometers per year in sunlight. The fast-growing tech company was founded in 2016 and currently employs more than one hundred employees.

The full list of the 2021 Flourish Prize Finalists can be viewed here. This year’s 77 Flourish Prizes Finalists represent exemplar stories from the 585 stories published in 2020, spanning the globe and showcasing business innovations for each of the 17 UN Global Goals. The finalist stories this year are authored by students from 31 universities under the guidance of 35 professors. The businesses represented span 20 countries across the globe.
