The Netherlands: perfect start for your career
December 4, 2019 | 2 min read
So you’re ready to take your career to the next level. Your dream is to land an international management position. You can see it now: a lucrative career perspective, the chance of starting a better life in Europe, and the possibility to provide financial support for your family. But is it too good to be true? Definitely not. Many others did exactly that, and kick-started their international career through an MBA or MSc education program at a business school in The Netherlands... Wait. The Netherlands? Exactly. That tiny country just bursting with career opportunities. And don’t forget about Amsterdam! Many international graduates still live and work there, even though they finished their studies years ago.
Low unemployment, high quality of life
There’s very little unemployment in The Netherlands, the economy is stable and job seekers are spoiled for choice: here, you’ll find everything from multinationals to startups, from finance to retail, and from consultancy to tech. Businesses are lining up to hire international talent with an MBA or MSc education. Add to that the excellent Dutch health care system, its reliable public transport, an international airport, and the fact that it’s currently seventh in the Quality of Life Rankings for mid-2019, and the message is clear: If you want to start a promising international career in Europe, The Netherlands is the place to be! Or are you still torn between Europe and the USA?
Europe or USA?
Of course the USA has a lot to offer, as well. However, unlike the USA, many European countries offer extended student visas that let international students stay in the country for another year after graduation. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to find a job that suits you, to start your own business, or to do an internship before you make up your mind. By the way, The Netherlands is the only European country that doesn’t list any requirements for this additional year. Another benefit to European MSc and MBA programs is that they only run for 1 year instead of 2.
The Netherlands, or another European country?
Here’s a unique benefit to doing your MBA or MSc in The Netherlands, on top of that extra year without requirements: you don’t even have to speak Dutch to find a suitable job after graduating. Many Dutch companies use English as their working language, and there’s a good chance your Dutch colleagues will be fluent in English anyway. You won’t find that in countries like Spain, France or Germany. Of course there’s always the UK, but with all the insecurities surrounding Brexit, that might not be the most strategic choice.
