HELP! My career has come to a standstill; what to do?

March 28, 2019 | 1 min read

Around the time we turn 35 is the busiest time of our lives. Striking a balance between your work and personal life can be pretty hard. Your family, friends, relatives, hobbies and work all demand your full attention, and that one question continues to haunt you: 'Is this all there is?' You have the feeling that you’re standing still; you want to grow in your job, but you have no idea how to go about doing it. Continuing to grow takes time however, time you want to spend with your family and friends. Once you realize that you have to pull out all the stops to continue growing in your career, where do you start?

Good preparation

It is very tempting to spring into action, browsing job sites or looking for educational or training programs. However, this is not the best way to start. As applies to so many things, good preparation is half the battle. Make a deal with yourself that you will first think about what the next step in your career would be, and how you will take this step.

Take the time

Take some time to figure out what you want to achieve and what your motives are. Set aside a few days for yourself or a regular part of a day every week to work on your next step. It’s best to do this someplace where you won’t get distracted and where you can take some distance from your work, such as a local coffee shop, for example. Being in a different environment can help ideas flow more freely.

Ask yourself critical questions

Craft the most concrete answers possible to a few essential, critical questions. This will give you a good idea of what you want to accomplish and what you need to start looking for.

Examples of questions to get you started include:

  • Why do I want to take the next step?
  • What will my next job be like, three years from now?
  • What appeals to me at the company I am working for?
  • How do people treat one another there? How does my next step differ from what I’m doing now?
