Accelerate your career #7: keep body & mind in balance

December 12, 2024 | 2 min read
loopbaanontwikkeling balansA defining trait of many CEOs and top executives is their stable, relaxed, and well-balanced approach to life. This enables them to tackle their work with greater confidence and conviction. For your own development, it is equally essential to maintain physical and mental health and exude energy. In the seventh and final part of our blog series on career development, we explore why balance is so important and how you can achieve it.

Leaders possess many qualities beyond a calm demeanor. They know what they want, stay informed about the latest developments in their field, are open to feedback, and are not afraid to seek help. Developing these traits successfully requires balance as a foundational condition. It increases your ability to remain calm and authentic despite high work pressure or occasional setbacks—a composure that positively influences colleagues and managers alike.

Optimal performance

When you are in balance, you can perform at your best, encounter fewer obstacles in your work, and concentrate more effectively. Good mental and physical health fosters resilience and enhances your capacity to grow and learn. An added benefit is that you can complete tasks more efficiently, reducing the risk of overburdening your colleagues.

In the first part of this series, we discussed the importance of aligning your work with your core motivations. This alignment also contributes to maintaining balance and projecting energy. Additionally, it is crucial to completely detach from work periodically. Recharge with activities that energize you, such as attending a theater performance, going to a movie, enjoying other outings, or engaging in sports. Regular physical activity helps you stay fit and reduces stress—don’t let your workout routines lapse.

Rest

Ensure you get enough rest and recovery time, including quality sleep. Good nutrition can also play a role in maintaining balance. When you feel good, you are more inclined to embrace challenges and learn new things, as well as think critically and find creative solutions.

Adequate rest is especially important in the personal lives of career-focused individuals. Whether you are just starting out in the job market, balancing a busy family life, or caring for others, private life is just as demanding as professional life. When you are in balance, you can accelerate your career without sacrificing too much of your personal life.

In addition to personal balance, another key equilibrium to maintain is between the time, energy, and financial investments you make to advance your career and the returns you achieve. With the tips from this blog series, you can bring more structure to your efforts, taking steps toward a successful and sustainable future for yourself, your organization, and society.
