5 tips for remaining relevant on the job market

The job market is changing at a rapid pace, and organizations are digitizing and computerizing like never before. To complicate things even further, a job in today’s world is no longer a job for life. How can you make sure that you remain relevant for the long term on the job market in spite of all these changes? Five tips to help you on your way.

1. Lifelong learning. Keep investing in yourself.

Identify the areas and expertise that are lacking in your organization and where your skills and interests offer a good match. Take a class or enroll in a program to expand your knowledge and skills to strengthen your position in your job. If you or your employer don’t have the budget for this, take on new projects within your own organization. This will allow you to continue your growth within your own job. After all, how amazing is it to gain new knowledge and be able to apply it immediately in your day-to-day work?

2. Career vs. job

We often see that employees’ focus tends to be on their current position. This no longer serves a purpose in today’s changing job market. All jobs ultimately change, and some disappear altogether. Shift the focus to your career. What are your long-term goals, and what steps do you need to take to achieve them? You could ask a career counselor these questions. By looking at your career, you ensure that you continue to look ahead, set goals for yourself and don’t get stuck in your own habits.

3. Thinking of changing jobs? Go for it!

Working the same job for a long time is comfortable and to be honest, it’s all you know. In the long run, however, this is disastrous for your career. Your position will become a habit if you continue to work at the same organization too long. The result? You are less appealing for a new employer. Take the smart approach and avoid staying in a job at the same organization too long. Have you ever thought about talking to a recruiter? Why not? After all, there’s no obligation involved.

4. Networking

Developing a good network is very important for remaining visible and ensuring you’re easily found in the job market. Don’t be afraid to make contact with the people around you. Attend lectures, inspiration sessions or seminars. This will bring you in contact with your peers faster and speeds up the making of connections!

5. Stay curious

Have you noticed that your job is changing? Make sure to capitalize on this. Stay curious about new trends and developments in your field so that you don’t get left behind. Read the latest blogs or whitepapers regularly, for example. This will keep your knowledge about your own job up-to-date.
