Roderik Ponds studied International economics and Economic Geograpy at the University of Utrecht and received a PhD at the same university on a thesis on the role of universities for regional development. During his PhD research he also worked as a researcher economics with the National Institute for Spatial Research(in dutch; Ruimtelijk Planbureau) and The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving) on a broad range of research projects ranging from regional economic development and innovation to housing markets. Subsequently Roderik worked as a research associate at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants on strategy related advisory projects for companies and other organisations in the chemical industry, in healthcare and public authorities. From 2011 onwards he is working as a senior researcher at the independent research organization Atlas voor gemeenten and active as a research associate/guest research at the faculty of Economics and Business of the University Groningen.
