Prof. dr. Nicolette van Gestel is cum laude afgestudeerd in de Sociale Geografie (1985) en gepromoveerd in Beleidsanalyse en Bestuurskunde aan de Radboud Universiteit (1994). Na haar promotie werkte ze aan de Faculteit der Managementwetenschappen van de RU Nijmegen als universitair docent Bestuurskunde (tot 1999) en als universitair hoofddocent Bedrijfskunde (tot 2012). Van 2009-2012 was zij tevens bijzonder hoogleraar aan TIAS. Sinds april 2012 is Nicolette van Gestel verbonden aan TIAS als gewoon hoogleraar Nieuwe Sturingsvormen in Sociale Zekerheid en Arbeidsvoorziening.
Het onderzoek van Nicolette van Gestel richt zich op innovatie in de (semi-)publieke sector, in het bijzonder op de besluitvorming over en implementatie van hervormingen in de sociale zekerheid, arbeidsvoorziening en gezondheidszorg. Zij was onder meer directeur van het Centrum voor Bestuur van de Maatschappelijke Onderneming bij TIAS; Academic Director van de Executive Master of Public and Non-Profit Management; en treedt op als docent binnen onderwijsprogramma’s voor de (semi)publieke sector. Zij heeft ruime ervaring met het leiden van (inter)nationale onderzoeksprojecten en begeleidt onderzoekers en PhD-studenten.
Nicolette van Gestel is kroonlid van de Sociaal-Economische Raad (SER) en lid van diverse advies- en toezichtcolleges. Zij was (co-)voorzitter van de Standing Working Group “Organizing the Public Sector: Governance & Public Management Reform” van de European Group for Organizational Studies (2007-2015) en voorzitter van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Arbeidsverhoudingen (2006-2012). Van Gestel maakt deel uit van diverse internationale research groepen, en werkt nauw samen met collega’s van onder meer Copenhagen Business School, King’s College London en Oslo Metropolitan University. Van 2018-2022 was Van Gestel lead partner van het EU Horizon2020 project Co Production and Co Governance: Strategic Management, Public Value and Co Creation in the Renewal of Public Agencies across Europe (COGOV). Van Gestel is lid van de Editorial Board van Public Management Review.
