TIAS MRE studies Toronto

Toronto’s housing sector has seen continuous growth in the past 15 years. It has never had a crisis such as the one we suffered in the Netherlands.
The city is popular with the new generation of employees with their urban lifestyle. Leading office-based organizations follow these new employees and establish their headquarters downtown. In April, the participants and professors of the TIAS Master of Real Estate program began a study tour in Toronto to learn the recipe of this real estate success.
An important factor is that Canada is very welcoming to university-educated migrants – a policy which is based on an entirely different interpretation of the word “migrant” than the one we are used to in the Netherlands. Toronto is a major metropolis where, thanks to a continuous flow of migrants, urbanization creates a continuous demand for high quality real estate. The new way of working, urban living, multi-channel shopping, and recreation are accommodated in many new property developments.
Visits to such areas as the City of Toronto, Brookfield Financial, Menkes Development, and Toronto Housing Community allow the participants to see the opportunities in the local real estate market from different perspectives. The central question was whether the city's growth also led to an expanding housing bubble. The objective of the trip was to better understand the developments in the real estate market in the Netherlands.
Below is a comprehensive reflective report on this study tour. In the report, the participants from the MRE program talk about the lessons that Dutch real estate professionals can learn from the ways things are done in Toronto.
