Introduction

In recent years, healthcare networks have proven to be an effective way to organise person-centred and integrated care around individuals. In many regions and organisations, cross-domain networks are in the start-up phase or have already been operational for some time. It is becoming increasingly clear that further professionalisation is needed. As a result, the key question is shifting from whether to collaborate to how to structure that collaboration so that it truly works for citizens, professionals and governing bodies, while also contributing to sustainable healthcare.

In the Advanced Program Healthcare Networks at TIAS, all aspects of healthcare networks are addressed to help you advance your own network. Together with leading professors and practitioners—who conduct research into healthcare networks and are themselves involved in 'best practice' cross-domain networks—you will work on developing a clear, shared mission and objectives. These are translated into concrete choices in areas such as governance, leadership, change management, funding, process design, data exchange and monitoring. You will also learn from international developments and become aware of the (legal) context in which you operate.

Participant profile

Participants in the Advanced Program Healthcare Networks are professionals working in healthcare and the social domain who take responsibility for setting up, strengthening or restructuring healthcare networks. You may work in primary, secondary, tertiary or preventive care, or across those boundaries, within a regional context. Most participants have a medical, social or organisational background and are looking for more structure and support to strengthen complex collaboration across organisations and domains.

The group consists of people who work in a variety of domains and organisations. By better understanding each other’s perspectives, you gain insight into what is truly needed to make a healthcare network successful in practice.

Why this program

In the coming years, more healthcare and support will need to be delivered by fewer people. At the same time, we want citizens to receive care and support that matches their personal wishes and those of their private network. That is why national agreements such as IZA, GALA and WOZO explicitly call for regional collaboration within healthcare networks and for coalitions that bridge different domains.

In many regions, regional analyses and plans have already been developed, and various network initiatives are already underway. The real challenge now is to organise this collaboration in a way that actually works in practice and does not get stuck in planning.

The Advanced Program Healthcare Networks helps you take that next step. You take a fresh, analytical look at your network’s challenge, the role of stakeholders and how you work together to create value for citizens. You work with concepts and tools from research and practice and apply them to choices that fit your organisation and region. In doing so, you not only increase your personal impact but also move your organisation’s and region’s healthcare network agenda forward in a tangible way.

What will the program bring you?

You will strengthen your healthcare network and take more control. The shared challenge becomes clearer and you translate it into concrete steps. You are no longer just participating, but actively guiding the development of the network.

You gain a strong, analytical perspective on collaboration. Concepts, success factors and analysis tools for healthcare networks help you achieve tangible results and monitor progress. This allows you to better identify where things are going wrong and where targeted interventions are needed.

You make well-informed choices in governance, leadership, change management, funding, process design, data exchange and monitoring. With the language and tools provided, you hold focused discussions with professionals, administrators, funders and other partners about all relevant aspects of healthcare networks.

You grow in your role as a network leader and strategic partner. Through the combination of scientific insights and practical examples, you can better articulate your vision for healthcare networks, engage others in the necessary decisions and take a stronger position in key meetings.

About this program

In the Advanced Program Healthcare Networks, you work on your own network challenge in two blocks of two consecutive days. Together with other participants and the faculty, you explore how to design and organise healthcare networks so that they function effectively in practice, whether they are already operating or still in the start-up phase. In every session, the big questions surrounding healthcare networks are placed directly alongside what is happening in your own network and organisation.

Professors and practitioners bring together the latest academic insights with hands-on experience from best-practice cross-domain networks for which they are responsible or closely involved. They demonstrate what actually works and where challenges arise. Through in-depth faculty contributions, case work and sharp group discussions, you apply these insights to your own network challenge. This enables you to view your network from a new perspective and make better-informed decisions about its purpose, structure and approach.

Between the blocks you continue to develop your network in your own professional practice. Around six months after the second session you return for a follow up day, during which you and the lecturers and fellow participants take stock of what has started to move within your network and which next steps make sense.

The content of the programme is structured around three interrelated themes.

Theme 1: Purpose, Governance and Design of Healthcare Networks

If you want to establish a healthcare network, you need to carefully consider its purpose and design. In this theme, you explore the reasons behind healthcare networks and the various design options. You sharpen the focus of your network. What value are you aiming to create? And which governance model fits best? You examine different design options and explore what these mean for roles, mandates, decision-making and accountability, both for individual organisations and for the network as a whole. You also learn to be aware of the legal context in which you operate.

Theme 2: Hard and Soft Success Factors in Collaboration

Discover which factors can make or break a successful transition to working in networks, and how to influence them. All aspects of leadership and change management are addressed. Mutual trust is often seen as a key success factor in effective networks. But what does this concept really mean? And how can you actively contribute to building trust among partners? These and other questions are central to this theme. You learn about and discuss which interventions and forms of leadership and change management are appropriate for your context.

Theme 3: Putting the Transition into Practice

Once you know where you want to go and have created the necessary preconditions, it is time to take action. That is the focus of this theme. You learn how to operationalise a healthcare network. How do you create maximum value for the client while considering the financial interests of the participating organisations? What does this mean for network design? Which organisations take responsibility for which activities within the network? And how do you organise funding that works for all partners involved? You will explore existing examples and innovative funding models. Finally, you will make informed decisions about the design of data exchange between the participating organisations and receive all the tools you need to create a successful monitoring framework.
