Introduction
Digital transformation often revolves around tools and AI, but beneath the surface, economic rules determine the outcome. Platforms, software, and data change competition, dependencies, and revenue models.
In the Digital Economics Master Module, you will learn to recognize and apply this logic: network effects, economies of scale, lock-in, and marginal costs. You will work with case studies and your own organizational context, so you can better substantiate your investments, platform strategies, and digital growth choices.
Participant profile
For professionals who make strategic decisions about digitalization, data, and software, for example, in roles related to strategy, product management, digital, IT, finance, or consultancy.
You see how quickly digitalization is changing markets and revenue models: platforms that dominate, software that continues to grow, vendor dependency, and uncertainty about the true cost of "free" data or AI. You're looking for a clear economic framework to better understand network effects, economies of scale, lock-in, pricing, and software outsourcing.
You want more than just buzzwords: a solid foundation of understanding and language to discuss the economics behind digital choices with management, product teams, vendors, and partners. This allows you to assess investments, platform strategies, and collaborations not just based on gut feeling, but also on the digital economy and mechanisms.

About this program
The Economic Logic of Digital Markets and Platforms
In the Digital Economics Master Module, you will delve into the economic rules behind digitalization. You will explore how data, software, and platforms are changing market structures, why some players are growing exponentially while others are stagnating, and the role of network effects, economies of scale, and switching costs.
You will work with digital economics concepts related to platform strategies, software as a capital asset, and the (nearly) zero marginal costs of digital products. You will examine lock-in, supplier dependency, and the question of when building, buying, or outsourcing software and IT services in-house makes economic sense.
You will apply these insights to case studies and your own organizational context. This will allow you to develop an analytical framework and vocabulary to assess digital growth, platform models, AI investments, and software portfolios, and to discuss strategic choices related to digitalization with management and other stakeholders in a well-informed manner.
Your learning journey in brief
In 6 weeks, you will complete a compact learning journey – from online start to final assignment. The precise mix of teaching methods varies per master module, but you can generally expect the following:

Three consecutive on-campus days – During three intensive days on campus, you will deepen your theoretical knowledge, work on cases and assignments, and share experiences with other professionals in varied, engaging sessions.
Deepening between meetings – Between contact sessions, you will continue working independently with literature and assignments, applying your insights to your own case.
Practical assessment – You will conclude the master module with a graded assignment that directly aligns with your work environment and learning objectives.
Microcredential & stackability
Upon completion, you will receive a TIAS certificate with a digital badge (microcredential, 4 ECTS). The ECTS obtained can be stacked within the NVAO-accredited Executive Master Information Management and Digital Transformations (MIMDT).
