Introduction

“If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

Sooner or later, every commissioner and supervisor will have to deal with a crisis. It is impossible to predict when that moment will come, whether it involves an incident, an integrity issue, a cyberattack, reputational damage, or administrative failure, but it is certain to happen, and that is precisely why good preparation is essential in order to make the right decisions and act effectively under pressure.

This advanced module offers you intensive and practical preparation for those moments when it really matters. You will gain insight into your role and responsibility before, during, and after a crisis, and learn how crisis communication can either strengthen or exacerbate a situation. Through a combination of strategic framework, current practical examples, and a case study from a supervisory board member, you will develop the perspective needed to make a difference as a supervisor.

Participant profile

This advanced module has been developed for experienced and novice supervisors and supervisory board members who want to strengthen their professional resilience in crisis situations. Board secretaries, who often play a key role in crisis dynamics and decision-making in practice, are also welcome to attend.

You recognize the need to:

  • be better prepared for unexpected crises
  • be able to take a stronger position towards management and stakeholders
  • better understand communication and governance in times of crisis

Why this program

This advanced module helps you stay on course amid the chaos. You will learn how to create calm and clarity as a supervisor, when to ask further questions or intervene, and how to prevent communication from exacerbating the crisis rather than mitigating it. This will not only strengthen your personal effectiveness, but also the quality of supervision as a whole.

What will the program bring you?

You have a keen understanding of your role and responsibility as a commissioner or supervisor before, during, and after a crisis.

You can cope better with tension, pressure, and uncertainty, and you remain able to act strategically and independently.

You know how crisis communication works and what influence you have as a regulator on perception and trust.

You have concrete frameworks for action and questions to effectively question and guide the board in times of crisis.

About this program

Morning – Crisis management from a supervisory perspective

In the morning, José Tijssen – director at Hill+Knowlton, specialist in complex issues surrounding crisis, reputation, and stakeholder management – will lead an interactive session on crisis management from the perspective of supervisory board members and regulators.

You will gain insight into:

  • the different phases of a crisis
  • the specific responsibilities of the supervisory board/supervisory committee
  • the tensions between supervision, management, and external pressure
  • typical dilemmas such as: when to intervene, when to give space?

Using practical cases and scenarios, you will learn how, as a regulator, you can offer calm, clarity, and direction when emotions, interests, and time pressure are running high.

Afternoon – Crisis communication and reputation

In the afternoon, Rob Huisman – management consultant, author of Communicator and former journalist (including for FD and De Telegraaf) – will take you through the dynamics of crisis communication.

You will gain insight into:

  • how the media, stakeholders, and the public respond in crisis situations
  • which communication choices influence the outcome of a crisis
  • the role of the supervisory board/supervisory committee in relation to management, spokesperson, and reputation

We will zoom in on the core of crisis communication: weighing when and how you, as a supervisor, should be visible, how responsibility and blame develop in the public debate, and when intervention is necessary in the event of communication failure in order to protect trust and reputation.

Closing – Learning from a real crisis

The day will conclude with an experienced supervisory board member who will speak candidly about a crisis he or she has experienced and the difficult decisions that had to be made. The name and case study will be announced on the day itself.

Afterwards, participants will receive the book Communicator by Rob Huisman.
