Introduction

Sustainability affects your organization’s competitiveness, its capacity to innovate and its future-readiness. You know change is needed. Yet translating sustainability ambitions into strategy, value creation and tangible results is proving difficult. As a result, sustainability often remains a separate agenda item, when it is in fact a strategic challenge.

That challenge calls for leadership that goes beyond understanding what is changing. In the Sustainable Leadership Program, you learn to shape sustainable transformation and actually make it happen, working on a current issue from your own practice. So even during the program, you take concrete steps to make sustainability part of your organization’s strategy and everyday choices.

The Sustainability Leadership Program is a collaboration between TIAS and Future Up, the largest business network in the field of sustainability.

Flexible modular structure

The Sustainable Leadership Program consists of two three-day modules. You choose the module that fits the issue you are working on, or take both as one coherent learning journey. This flexible, modular design makes the program easy to fit into a busy work and personal schedule.

Does this sound familiar?

  • Sustainability targets are set, but investments and KPIs are still geared to business as usual
  • New initiatives run up against familiar ways of working and vested interests
  • Progress depends on value chain partners with different priorities
  • You want to bring colleagues and stakeholders along, but the impact on their work is still unclear

Why this program

Organizations today operate in a world undergoing fundamental change. Climate change, technological developments, geopolitical shifts, evolving customer expectations, and new regulations are reshaping markets, value chains, and business models.

Yet the pace of change in business remains slow, even as planetary boundaries continue to be exceeded. Sustainability ambitions often clash with immediate business priorities. The Sustainability Leadership Program helps you address this tension and explore what it takes to translate sustainability ambitions into strategic choices and concrete action within your organization.

Why choose this program?

  • Strategy and implementation in one program: Many programs help you understand what sustainability transformation means. This program starts there and takes you through to implementation. Strategy and implementation therefore receive equal attention, each in a dedicated module.
  • Academic expertise grounded in practice: You learn from faculty members who combine academic expertise with practical experience in business and organizations. They connect scientific insights with current examples, best practices, and lessons from their own professional experience.
  • Your organization's challenge at the heart of the program: Throughout the program, you work on a current challenge from your own organization. This allows you to connect insights from both modules and explore what they mean for the decisions and next steps in your own professional practice.
  • Developed in collaboration with Future Up: This track was developed by TIAS in collaboration with Future Up, a business network dedicated to sustainable business practices. It connects academic knowledge with the real challenges faced by organizations working on sustainability transformation.
  • New perspectives from your peers: You learn alongside experienced professionals and managers from different roles, organizations, and sectors. By sharing challenges and experiences, you gain insights not only from the faculty but also from one another's perspectives and approaches.

What will the program bring you?

You learn to analyze the impact of societal, economic, and technological transitions on your organization and make well-informed strategic decisions.

You learn to develop sustainable business models and assess opportunities for value creation, while considering the collaboration required across ecosystems and value chains.

You learn to translate sustainability strategy into action and assess what changes are needed in your organization and how it manages performance.

You strengthen your ability to lead sustainability transformation and learn to use communication to engage colleagues and other stakeholders.

About this program

The two modules complement and reinforce each other, bringing strategy and implementation together. In the first module, you explore the transitions reshaping business and develop a strategy for sustainable value creation. The second module builds on these insights, focusing on the leadership, collaboration, and organizational changes needed to turn that strategy into action. Together, they provide a comprehensive approach to sustainable transformation, both within and beyond your organization.

Working on your organization's challenge and exploring the potential of AI

Throughout the program, you connect what you learn to a current challenge from your own professional practice. You explore both strategy and implementation: What needs to change? What collaboration will this require? And what does it mean for your role? By continuously applying new insights to your own context, you develop well-informed next steps for your organization.

You also explore how AI can contribute to addressing your challenge, for example through sustainable innovation and decision-making. AI remains a tool: your organization's sustainability challenge comes first.

The full program or an individual module

Do you want to develop a strategic direction for sustainability and work on its implementation? Then you can take both modules, with your organization's challenge connecting them and a personal leadership assessment adding further depth to your development.

Prefer to take just one module? Module 1 focuses on transitions, strategy, and sustainable value creation. Module 2 focuses on leadership and driving sustainable change. A Program Adviser can help you determine which option best matches your development needs.

Program structure

Each module covers three topics.

Module 1: Sustainable Business Transformation

  1. Businesses in Transition
  2. Strategy and Sustainable Value Creation
  3. Ecosystems and Value Chain Collaboration

Module 2: Leading Sustainable Transformation

  1. Responsible Leadership
  2. Executing Purpose-Driven Business Models
  3. Strategic Communication for Sustainable Transformation

Personal leadership assessment and certificate

As a participant in the full program, you complete a personal leadership assessment. You gain insight into your leadership style, strengths, and areas for development when leading sustainable change. These insights support your reflection and development throughout the program.

Upon successful completion of both modules, you receive the TIAS Sustainability Leadership Program certificate. This demonstrates that you have completed the full program, from understanding sustainability transitions to driving change within your organization.
