The Amphia Hospital in Breda has been nominated for the Healthcare Inspectorate Safe Care Award 2013. The 'checklist for requesting blood transfusions' project, is an initiative by Rob Slappendel. In addition to his role at the Amphia, Slappendel is an endowed professor of Safety and Quality in care at TIAS School for Business and Society.

Amphia is one of the three nominees for the Healthcare Inspectorate Safe Care Award 2013. The prize was awarded to UMC St. Radboud in Nijmegen on 20 June.

Amphia converted the Dutch Institute for Healthcare Improvement (CBO) guideline for blood transfusions into a checklist. This ensures that the CBO guideline is respected. As a result of introducing this methodology the Amphia achieved cost savings on two levels: 16% less blood was used, which delivers cost savings of EUR 400,000 and less complications arise as a result of blood transfusions. In total adopting the Amphia methodology delivered cost savings of EUR 1.6 million.

The Safe Care Award is an initiative by the Healthcare Inspectorate (IGZ) This year was the fifth time the prize was awarded to the best initiative related to patient and client safety in the healthcare sector.

Slappendel works for TIAS Health. This initiative combines teaching and research activities related to health managed by Nardo van der Meer. This results in a strong portfolio of evidence-based training related to management in the healthcare sector.

You can find more information about the IGZ Safe Care Award on the Healthcare Inspectorate's website.
