Frank Dost completed the TIAS Executive Master of Management in Education (MME) in 2018. Frank has been principal at Gymnasium Celeanum for three years and talks about the various insights he gained, partly thanks to MME. "In relation to change, improvement, and innovation in education, the 'why' question is incredibly important. It quickly directs what you're going to do and how you're going to do it. In practice, I've noticed that by exploring that question together with colleagues and taking the time to do so, a lot of energy is unleashed and people naturally start moving."

From teacher to team leader to principal

Two years before Frank started his TIAS master's degree, he had made the transition from teacher to team leader at a secondary school in Hoogezand-Sappemeer. His first management position. This led him to decide to pursue a degree program not only to grow in his current role but also to explore what else is out there. "And if I'm going to pursue a degree, which is a significant investment in terms of money, time, and energy, I might as well do it right and dive in." That's how he discovered the Executive Master of Management in Education program at TIAS. The master's program prepared him well for school leadership in his current role as principal.

Why TIAS?

Frank was primarily looking for an intellectual challenge. As a philosophy graduate, he didn't just want to earn a degree; he wanted to truly put in the effort. He found that program at TIAS. "On the one hand, it was the academic foundation the program provides, and on the other, the fact that there's a lot to be gained from fellow students. I'd heard that from a colleague who had already completed the program. I liked the idea that you can draw inspiration from the people around you and learn from each other. I also became interested in my colleague's stories about how organizations work and the personal leadership aspect of the program." I enjoyed developing myself and my personal leadership and daring to ask critical questions about it, but also seeing what I was good at and where I needed the qualities of others.'
