A significant number of institutional investors publicly state a conviction that using environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) information in portfolio selection will help them generate better investment returns in comparison to their benchmarks or competitors. But will ESG information really provide investors with a long-term competitive advantage? Can shareholder engagement help investors achieve financial goals better than ESG investment screens? And what are the implications of recent studies showing ESG impacts the cost of capital?
